Diani is one of the easiest places in Kenya to slow a family trip down. The beach is long, the reef is close, and a week here can carry the energy of a safari that came before it.
Rooms that actually work
Ask for interconnecting rooms or a family cottage before you fall in love with a photograph. A beautiful hotel with one king bed and a sofa is not a family plan. We book the room type first, then the activities around nap times and early dinners.
Days that stay short
A dhow sail, a morning on the reef with a tide that suits children, and one forest walk are enough. The rest of the day can be the pool and the sand. We would rather leave a gap in the programme than fill every afternoon, because the beach is the point.
Getting there
Most families fly from the Mara or Nairobi to Ukunda, then take a short road transfer. If you are coming straight from a long-haul flight, spend a night in Nairobi or go straight to the coast and start the safari after everyone has slept. The order of the trip matters as much as the hotel.
