What to pack for a Kenya safari

Neutral clothes, a warm layer for dawn drives, and less luggage than you think. The coast, if you add it, wants a different bag.

Most of a Kenya safari is spent sitting, looking and walking short distances between the vehicle and the tent. Pack for dust, early cold and a strong midday sun, not for a fashion week in the bush.

In the vehicle

Neutral colours help, but they matter less than comfort. Bring a fleece or light jacket for 6am game drives, even in warm months. A scarf is useful against dust. Sunglasses, a hat with a brim, and sunscreen you have already tested are the things guests most often wish they had packed twice.

What to leave at home

Bright white shows the dust immediately. Hard-shell suitcases are awkward in small bush aircraft. Camouflage clothing is a poor idea near parks and security points. If you are continuing to Diani, Watamu or Lamu, a soft bag that can be left in Nairobi, or a separate beach pouch, keeps the safari kit from taking over the coast.

A short list we actually use

  • Two or three neutral shirts and a warm layer
  • Comfortable closed shoes and sandals
  • Binoculars if you already own them
  • Any personal medication in its original packaging
  • A small day bag for the vehicle

We send a fuller list with your proposal, matched to the camps and the season you are travelling.
