Lamu Old Town is a Swahili island town of narrow streets, carved doors and almost no cars. People arrive expecting a resort and find a place that moves by boat and by foot. That is the reason to go.
What the days look like
A dhow into the channel, a walk through the town with someone who knows the courtyards, and a long lunch. Shela has the sand if you want a swim. The point is not to collect activities. The point is to stop collecting them.
How to arrive
Fly to Lamu Manda and take the boat across. Do not plan Lamu as a single night between other parks. Four nights is the shortest stay that feels like the island rather than a transfer.
Who it suits
Travellers who like towns, food and a quieter finish to a Kenya trip. It is a poor match for guests who want a full-service beach club and a packed schedule. We will say that before we book it.
