Tsavo and the red elephants

Tsavo is big, red and quieter than the Mara. It suits travellers who want space and elephants more than a checklist of the Big Five.

Tsavo East and Tsavo West together are vast. The soil stains the elephants red. The drives are longer, the other vehicles are fewer, and the trip feels less managed than a Mara morning. That is either exactly what you want or a reason to choose somewhere else.

What you are likely to see

Elephants, often close and often dusted that distinctive red. Lions are there, but they are not presented on a schedule. The landscape, the lava at Shetani, and Mzima Springs in Tsavo West give the days a shape beyond the animals.

How we use it

Four nights split between the west and the edge of the east is a proper Tsavo journey. It also sits well before or after the coast, because the road to Diani or Mombasa is more reasonable than a same-day leap to the Mara.
